Law Clerk, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia.  Worked mainly on criminal cases in that office, writing appellate briefs, preparing legal memoranda in connection with Federal Tort Claims Act matters at the trial and appellate levels.

July, 1969 - April, 1970

Commissioned as First Lieutenant, Judge Advocate General's Corp, United States Army and promoted to Captain, Judge Advocate General's Corp, October, 1970.

Legal Assistance Officer in October, 1970, providing legal service and advice in tax, domestic, contract and real estate matters, preparing wills, etc. Began trial practice as prosecutor and defense counsel. Assigned in criminal cases at the Special and General Court-Martial levels.

Assigned to Stuttgart Trial Center, Stuttgart, Germany,  at its inception in June, 1972, exclusively engaged as prosecutor of criminal offenses before Special and General Courts-Martial. Among the cases assigned were offenses of premeditated murder, negligent homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, larceny, possession of dangerous drugs, riot, and minor military offenses.

Assigned to 2nd Support Command as the Staff Judge Advocate in May, 1973, until released from active duty December, 1973, rendering legal advice and counsel to the Commanding General regarding Military Justice matters. Recipient of Army Commendation Medal upon reassignment from 2nd Support Command.

January, 1974 - March, 1979

January, 1974, began practice in Tifton, Georgia, with the law firm of Reinhardt, Whitley and Sims, actively engaged in preparation and trial of tort, personal injury and general litigation matters. Became partner in firm in January, 1976, continuing to be involved almost exclusively in trial practice and general litigation, including representation of  insurance companies on defense matters. Included within companies represented were: United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company, Auto-Owners Insurance Company, Georgia Farm Bureau Company, Utica Mutual Insurance Company, Ideal Mutual Insurance Company, Bituminous Casualty and others. Withdrew from firm in March, 1979.

March, 1979 - August, 1979

Began solo practice in March, 1979, in Tifton, Georgia, with emphasis on litigation matters, including insurance defense, and workers' compensation matters, for several insurance companies, including primarily Auto-Owners Insurance Company, United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company, Grange Mutual Insurance Company, and Ideal Mutual Insurance Company. Also involved in litigation matters for Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation, William Davies Company, d/b/a Shur Gain Feed Division, and Burroughs Corporation.

August, 1979 - November, 1980

Formed partnership with E. Wycliffe Orr.  The firm of Simpson & Orr continued representation of insurance companies, including additionally Cotton States Mutual Insurance Company, Shield Insurance Company, Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Company, and Kemper Insurance Companies.

January, 1981 - 1999

Formed partnership with Joseph B. Gray, Jr., January, 1981, under the firm name of Simpson & Gray.  Continuation of practice with concentration on insurance defense and litigation matters representing Cotton States Mutual Insurance Company, Shield Insurance Company, Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Company, Utica Mutual Insurance Company, Grange Mutual Insurance Company, Integrity Insurance Company, Georgia Mutual Insurance Company, Integon General Insurance Corporation, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Penn Millers Mutual Insurance Company, Penn-America Insurance Company, United Insurance Company, Atlanta Casualty Insurance Company, Union Fidelity Insurance Company, Bankers and Shippers Insurance Company of New York, Scottish and York Insurance Company, Kemper Insurance Company and The Equity Insurance Group. Continued an active trial practice in the areas of insurance, automobile, tort, and product liability law.  Additional concentration in the area of arson insurance and defense matters.

Also involved in product liability matters on behalf of plaintiffs in State and Federal Courts.  Co-counsel for Tift County Board of Education, 1987 until present.  Counsel for Tift County Housing Authority from 1985 until 1994.  At present almost exclusively engaged in litigation involving approximately 65% defense matters and 35% plaintiff matters.

Special Assistant to Attorney General, Georgia, 1996-1997 handling tort claim cases. 

In 1991, began serving as an arbitrator/mediator in the Pilot Arbitration Program of the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Georgia and in 1993, completed the 20-hour mediation/arbitration seminar sponsored by USA&M. Since 1993, has served as mediator or arbitrator in over 250 cases filed in the Superior Courts of the State of Georgia and U.S. Federal District Courts.

The firm name was changed to Simpson, Gray & Cross in January, 1996, with the  addition of Melanie B. Cross as a partner. The nature of the law practice was not changed.  Mrs. Cross withdrew from the firm in March 1998.

February, 1994 - 1999

In addition to continuing a full-time law practice as set forth above, served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University, teaching Insurance during the academic years 1994 and 1995.  Attended the 11th Circuit Judicial Conferences for the years 1995, 1997 and 1999.

Formed a partnership with Melanie Barbee-Cross, continuing practice with concentration on litigation matters including insurance defense and personal injury matters for Plaintiffs, along with increased emphasis in health care and employment law and serving as a mediator or arbitrator in civil litigation matters, continuing representation of Tift County Board of Education.  In 1999, the partnership of Simpson & Cross also opened an office in Sylvester, Georgia. 

Solo practice with concentration in litigation including insurance defense, personal injury, health care and employment laws, while retaining aspects of a general practice including real estate and bank related matters. Arbitration and mediation services and representation of the Tift County Board of Education. The practice maintained two offices, one in Sylvester, Georgia and one in Tifton, Georgia.


Appointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue to fill a vacancy on the Superior Court for the Tifton Judicial Circuit. 
2007 to present

Principal of Simpson Mediation Services providing mediation/arbitration services of all types of civil cases in Superior and Federal Courts in Georgia.
